Dr. Enuf
Monday, February 23rd, 2009Last week was Conan O’Brian’s last week hosting Late Night. For old time’s sake, I DVRed and watched every episode last week… probably the first time in 5 years I’ve sat through an entire episode. It brought back memories of early college, when I went literally YEARS only missing a few episodes (I kinda drifted away after Andy Richter left).
Strangly enough, another old college friend of mine popped up last night for the first time in many years: Dr. Enuf.
Dr. Enuf is a carbonated soda drink made in Johnson City, TN by Tri-Cities Beverage. It has been bottled there for over 50 years, but has never really caught on outside of the East Tennessee area (unlike Mountain Dew, which started off in the same city, company, and decade, but took off after being bought up by Pepsico).
I got totally hooked on Dr. Enuf in my late highschool years. It’s got plenty of caffiene, and a ton of Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), which I still suspect I have some sort of deficieny in because I seem to crave anything that packs B1. The vitamins give the light-colored drink a bit of a fruity, almost bananna flavor, although it is certainly NOT from fruit, but from the vitamins alone. The drink is highly carbonated. It does pack a decent punch of what most modern energy drinks do (i.e…. sugar, caffiene, and vitamins). It’s not the worst hangover cure I’ve ever tried.
It has been known to be a mixer with gin from time to time in my college days.
The good news is YESTERDAY I found it for the first time outside of Tennessee! At least one Harris Teeter in Greensboro, NC now carries Dr. Enuf. My only regret is not finding it a week earlier so I could have sat around and watched Conan while drinking my favorite soft drink of all time.
