It’s the little things in life
Friday, February 6th, 2009Last week I noticed the water from the water cooler in my office tasted strange. The taste remained even after changing bottles. A bit like plastic, or burnt lasagna, or something… I couldn’t exactly put my finger on it. When the water delivery guy came by, I intercepted him and made him taste it. He agreed and said he would have a “technician” take a look at it (hell of a business card that person must have “WATER COOLER TECHNICIAN”). I have just been drinking tap water since, which really is no big deal for me, except you have to go into the bathroom to get it, and it often smells of shit in there, which is not the most appealing thing when you are retrieving substance that you will ingest. The technician never showed up and I had kinda written it off because things have been busy. It was the least of my worries.
So yesterday was one of the coldest days of the season in Greensboro. Coincidentally, for the first time in a long time, my job required me to stand out in the cold all day. Really terrible timing on my part. It was numbing because I was not dressed appropriately (think frozen toes & snot frozen to my beard).
During an afternoon break, I came in to have a hot cup of tea and thaw out my toes when out of the corner of my eye I noticed that the water cooler stand had been replaced! Mr. or Ms. Technician must have showed up while I was out on the yard. Here’s the great part…. they installed one of those fancy contraptions that dispensed either HOT or COLD water!
I’m very excited about this new development. I spend a lot of time in this office and I drink a lot of hot beverages. The nasty microwave I have been using to heat water seems to impart a hint of hot-pocket flavor to my green tea. Now, to get steaming hot bottled water, I just walk about 20 steps from my desk and pull a lever. Totally amazing.
The future is now.
