North Carolina Blue Laws

The bad news:  The newly proposed NC budget includes significant new taxes on alcohol sales.

The good news:  There is a bill floating around the state legislature that would finally kill the remaining religion/prohibition based blue laws.

Currently, liquor stores are closed all day Sunday and Beer/Wine sales are only allowed after NOON on Sunday (both in stores and in bars).

The new bill would recognize that what we call “Sunday” is in fact just another arbitrary division of time approximately equivalent to the time it takes the earth to rotate once on its axis… and a higher power will probably not get angry if fermented sugars are purchased within that arbitrary unit of time.

I can’t wait till they repeal those ridiculous laws. How many times have I painstakingly picked out a couple of bottles of wine at the grocery store and had them confiscated at the checkout counter. Drives me quite bonkers, and makes no sense at all.

I do wish we had real liquor stores too with lots of selection and competitive pricing. The state really rips you off at the ABC stores and they’ve got zero selection.
